DARE COUNTY, NC - Traffic on the Wright Memorial Bridge should be back to normal by day's end, just in time for tourist season on the Outer Banks.

The westbound span over the Currituck Sound at the Currituck and Dare County line had been closed since September, 2013.   Crews have smoothed out humps on the bridge to create a smoother ride, eliminating conditions that cause trucks and other large vehicles to bounce and potentially damage the bridge.  They also have been replacing expansion joints, which let the span to expand and contract with the weather.

Two-thirds of that work is done, officials with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation say.  To complete the job, the bridge will close again in September and crews will finish the $6.3 million contract by May 15, 2015.
