SUFFOLK-VDOT is working on a variety of  plans to relieve traffic problems when pending road work is done on the James River Bridge this weekend.

According to Brooke Grow, a spokesperson with the department,  VDOT hopes to have a plan in place by Thursday so that drivers can know what to expect if they take the James River Bridge.

According to Del. Rick Morris of Isle of Wight County,  VDOT is looking at opening the James River Bridge to two way traffic on the northbound lanes.

Grow would not confirm that.

VDOT is trying to relieve concerns, not only of drivers,  but of business owners in Carrollton who have  fought the department on their decision to continue a full closure at the bridge.

"There had to be a way to rework this," said Morris.

VDOT closed the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel eastbound and the James River Bridge southbound lanes on the weekend of Sept. 14th through 16th which led to a traffic nightmare with drivers trying to get from the Peninsula to the south side.

The department has since put off the work on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel until after Columbus Day.

But the work on the James River Bridge southbound lanes, which were closed last weekend,  will continue as scheduled.
