CHESAPEAKE-Drivers may pay a toll to pay for improvements to Dominion Blvd. and the existing Chesapeake Expressway.

Officials will discuss plans for the area and take public comment at tonight's meeting.

Improvements to Dominion Boulevard include replacing the Steel Bridge with a fixed-span, high level bridge. The roadway is scheduled to open in 2017, at which time toll collections will begin.

A toll rate of $1.00 per crossing for a 2-axle vehicle has been proposed.

To learn more about the project and give your input, attend the 5:30 p.m. open house and public hearing from 6:30 p.m. -8:00 p.m. at City Council Chambers in City Hall, 306 Cedar Road.

If you can't attend, the deadline for comments is June 25. Send an email to evaughn@CityofChesapeake.net or a letter to Elizabeth Vaughn, Public Works Information Specialist, 306 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322.

By October, the city will have asked for bids and received proposals. A contract would be awarded in November and construction would begin in January 2013. The new roadway would open to traffic four years later.
