It’s Traffic Tidbits time! And this is quite a BIG week in the world of traffic alerts. You’ll definitely want to check out this week’s post!
Before we get into that though… Here’s a weather glimpse at the week. It looks like we start off pretty well, but the end of the week will be messy. The Weather Authority is predicting Thursday, Friday and Sunday to be wet days, so grab the umbrella and give yourself a few more minutes to get where you’re going those days. And don’t forget… I’ll have you’re covered for the ride into work on Daybreak, 4:30am-7:00am Monday-Friday!
Also, here’s some info for folks that may be impacted by the Route 460 Corridor Improvements Project. VDOT is holding five town hall meetings in areas between Suffolk and Petersburg for those who’d like to be involved in the project discussion. Three of those meetings are happening this week:
· Monday, July 21
o Waverly – Sussex Central High School
· Wednesday, July 23
o Disputanta – J.E.J. Moore Middle School
· Thursday, July 24
o Dendron – Surry County High School
Here are your major traffic alerts between Monday, July 21 and Sunday, July 2 (Note: Alerts with NEW!!! in front of them have been added since Monday):
NORFOLK/PORTSMOUTH: HUGE NEWS AT THE DOWNTOWN TUNNEL!!! You may be used to dealing with road work at the Downtown Tunnel on the WESTBOUND side, but road work EASTBOUND starts this week! That means you will see single lane closures Sunday through Thursday evenings, 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM each night. But what’s more… The eastbound tube will be COMPLETELY CLOSED 8:00 PM Friday through 5:00 AM Monday. In short—you will NOT be able to take the eastbound tube of the Downtown Tunnel AT ALL for the entire weekend! Plan an alternate route to get to Norfolk. Use one of the alternates below!
PORTSMOUTH: Drivers used to having access to/through Harbor Drive (which is what the Martin Luther King Freeway becomes on the south side of High Street) are in for a lot of permanent changes to accommodate the project to extend the freeway to I-264.
Harbor Drive in its current configuration will no longer exist, and could close as early as this week.
Besides access from the existing freeway or High Street on Harbor Drive, King Street and County Street will be permanently blocked off where they currently intersect with Harbor Drive, and eventually reconfigured to loop back into each other.
The current footprint of Harbor Drive will be taken up with the foundation of the new elevated extension of the MLK Freeway.
These are the changes to expect:
- Direct access to Harbor Drive is no longer available from King Street, County Street and Meander Road
- Those wishing to access King Street or County Street east of Harbor Drive will need to use Constitution Avenue
- Those wishing to access King Street, Meander Road or County Street west of Harbor Drive will need to use Confederate Avenue
The first phase of work after the closure will involve the relocation of utilities. Once that work's complete, the roadways will be permanently reconfigured (as previously described) to accommodate the new raised MLK Extension.
