VIRGINIA BEACH–Drivers on I-264 in Va. Beach need to avoid part of the roadway late Thursday morning.

From 11:00 a.m. to about noon, Dominion Power crews will be replacing a power line over the roadway between First Colonial Road (Exit 21) and Birdneck Road (Exit 22).

At first, the roadway was being closed in both directions at the same time.  Then it was decided to do alternate closings.  Now, as work was to begin, Va. State Police and Dominion Power decided to close both sides simultaneously.

They expect all the work to take about 10-15 minutes to complete, but an hour was requested in case there were delays or complications.

VDOT says the power company requested that time of day to conduct the work.

"This is part of a long–term reliability project we’ve been working on," said Dominion Virginia Power spokeswoman Bonita Harris. "We do need to do it during the day for safety reasons, so our crew can see what they’re doing.

Harris says the company was advised by Va. State Police that 11:00 a.m. was the least busy daytime hour for the interstate.
