SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY — The Virginia Department of Transportation has closed the bridge that connects Route 622 New Road and Route 460 General Mahorne Boulevard in Southampton County, until needed repairs can be made.

The timber deck bridge is owned by Norfolk Southern Railroad and crosses over the tracks on Route 635. VDOT bridge inspectors have been monitoring deterioration of the wood timbers and made the decision to close the bridge when major deterioration was detected. For motorist safety, the bridge will remain closed until Norfolk Southern Railroad makes the necessary repairs.

Motorists should follow the established six-mile detour:
From Route 635 Tucker Swamp Road
Turn left onto Route 622 New Road
Turn right onto Route 616 Main Street
Turn right onto Route 460 General Mahorne Boulevard
