NORFOLK -- It will be a bit cramped for a while for drivers on a downtown Norfolk road.
Beginning Wednesday through mid-March 2013, Saint Pauls Boulevard north will be down to two lanes between Waterside Drive and E. City Hall Avenue for construction of the new courts complex.
There will also be a through-lane closure on E. City Hall Avenue just before and after Saint Pauls Boulevard Right turns from the Waterside Drive exit onto Saint Pauls Boulevard northbound will at times be prohibited during the afternoon rush hour.
Off-duty Norfolk Police officers will assist with traffic during peak hours.
The complex will hold the General District, Circuit, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations courts. The first building will be constructed next to St. Pauls Blvd. Then, the current General District Courts portion of the Public Safety building will be demolished to make way for a new facility.
The state-of-the-art courts facility will be a LEED-certified 'green building.'
Phase I should be completed by December 2013. Phase II is estimated to be completed by December 2015, according to the city.
