Newport News dangerous intersection
NEWPORT NEWS -- Some residents have safety concerns about an intersection in Newport News, and this isn't the first time it's been addressed.
It's the intersection of Rumson Avenue and Maynard Drive in the Burton Park neighborhood.
In March, the city put up a warning sign about the "T" intersection, but residents tell 13News that drivers are still speeding and that their neighborhood is being used as a short cut from J. Clyde Morris Boulevard to Harpersville Road.
Two vehicles parked in the area were struck last weekend by a hit and run driver.
"I'm pretty certain the person was coming down Rumson Avenue which is the perpendicular street, at an excessive speed, with as much damage that was done to the car and to be able to hit it up over the curve into this angle," described Al Warnock who owns both vehicles.
In April, after reviewing a request for a stop sign, city engineers said the standards for a stop sign in that area were not met, and they believed excessive use of traffic controls as opposed to warnings could actually cause more accidents.
