YORK COUNTY -- Traffic should be moving better along part of Rt. 17 in York County.

On Friday, the Virginia Dept. of Transportation activated new technology to control 10 traffic signals on 7.5 miles of George Washington Memorial Highway.  Signals will change based on real-time vehicle demand.

VDOT says drivers should experience fewer stops at signals between Ella Taylor Road and Freedom Blvd., while those turning onto Route 17 from side streets can expect shorter waits at red lights.

Officials say another benefit of the technology is less fuel consumption.

Driver Sherrie Ratcliff is excited about the change.

"I'm up and down this road all the time.  I think it's a good thing, because it was like you get through one light and you're stopped at the next one."
