SUFFOLK--Work should begin next year on the new Route 460 from Suffolk to Prince George County.

The 55-mile stretch of road will be paid for by taxpayer dollars and tolls.

Business owners along 460 aren't happy with the plans if they involve daily costs to drivers.

"It will kill my business," said Tarek Hafez, owner of Tobacco Shack 2 in Windsor.

The Va. Dept. of Transportation says the new roadway will provide a faster hurricane evacuation route, better movement for trucks using the Port of Virginia and the military.

Three companies are competing to work with VDOT on the project and their financial proposals due by October 8, 2012.

Construction and acquisition of right of way would begin in 2013 with the new Route 460 scheduled to open in 2018.

VDOT says the toll rate would be $0.07 to $0.10 per mile, but the exact amount is not set.

Officials say the existing Rt. 460 will have no toll.

Until a partner is selected, VDOT will have a better idea as to the potential number of houses and businesses impacted.
