SUFFOLK -- A weekend traffic alert for people who use the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.
The northbound lanes, towards Newport News, will close at 8:00 p.m. so crews can repair concrete slabs inside the tubes and make repairs to expansion and contraction joints.
The northbound lanes should reopen by 6:00 a.m. Monday.
The closure is expected again on the weekend of March 30.
To get to the Peninsula, you can use the James River Bridge or the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
Work on southbound lanes is expected to begin after Easter and conclude before Memorial Day.
VDOT says the first phase of the project will take up to eight full weekend closures in order for crews to complete work in both tubes.
In February, VDOT awarded a $3.6 million contract to Virginia Paving to complete this work by August 2012.
