NORFOLK -- Gate 6 at Naval Station Norfolk will close at 8:00 a.m. Friday as work continues on the Hampton Blvd. grade separation project.

Due to the ongoing VDOT construction, commuters will see the activation of a new Hampton Blvd. detour road in early September.

A new detour roadway to the east of the current Hampton Blvd. will continue to move traffic along the corridor to and from the installation, which will maintain the same capacity of the current roadway.

Activation of the detour road will necessitate Gate 6 closure as current access from Hampton Blvd. will be lost.

A new bridge/access road will ultimately be constructed as part of project improvements, providing long-term vehicle access into Norfolk International Terminal and Gate 6.

The long-term intent of the current VDOT project is to provide a grade separation between vehicular traffic on Hampton Blvd. from train traffic into and out of Norfolk International Terminal.
