NEWPORT NEWS - State Police have identified the man who died Wednesday in a crash on Interstate 64 near Fort Eustis.
Deceased is the driver of a 2004 Toyota Camrey, Jamall Keith Walker, 26, of the 4000 block of Orcutt Avenue in Newport News. His passenger, Chanatha Dinia Nettles, 23, of Hampton is in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General.
It is unknown if alcohol was a factor. Both occupants were wearing their safety belts.
The accident happened about 8:00 a.m. near Fort Eustis and one person was trapped, according to Va. State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya.
The accident involved just one vehicle. Both directions were closed for a short time so Nightingale air ambulance could land.
"Nightingale brought in a trauma patient from the accident to Sentara Norfolk General," Sentara spokeswoma Kim Van Sickel told WVEC.com.
One lane eastbound reopened around 9:05 a.m. and then the right lane and shoulder reopened by 10:00 a.m., but traffic was backed up for several miles.
The left lane remained closed for accident reconstruction as the investigation continues, Sgt. Anaya stated.
