SUFFOLK -- A Suffolk woman is lucky to be alive after a train struck her car Tuesday afternoon.
It happened about 1:45 p.m. on the railroad tracks near East Washington Street and Pinner Street.
Veda Mercer says she froze when the crossing arm came down as she crossed the tracks.
She recalled thinking she was going to die as she saw the Norfolk-Southern train bearing down on her car and then hit it. The vehicle spun around and she was able to walk away from the collision.
Mercer also says she has a new appreciation for every day.
The intersection was closed for a couple of hours for the investigation.
