Q. Where are traffic cameras located and how many are there?

A. There are over 250 cameras in Hampton Roads mainly located along I-64, I-264, I-464, I-664 and I-564. In addition there are also cameras on many surface streets in Hampton and at the Chesapeake Expressway toll plaza.

Q. Who operates the cameras?

A. VDOT's Hampton Roads Smart Traffic Center operates and maintains the majority of our cameras. WVEC.com partners with TrafficLand, a company based in Fairfax, Va., to provide the video display of VDOT cams seen on our Web site. Traffic camera images are also provided to WVEC.com by the City of Hampton and the City of Chesapeake.

Q. Why do the traffic camera pages reload automatically?

A. The traffic video images "time out" after one minute, leaving a blank image where the traffic camera would be. We have programmed our traffic pages to refresh every 60 seconds to allow you to continually monitor an individual camera without having to manually reload the page. The traffic index page does not reload automatically.

Q. Why are some traffic cameras video while others are still images?

A. Online video is available for most VDOT cameras from our partner, TrafficLand. However, not all traffic cameras are available with video. For those cameras we display still images from VDOT. In addition, we display cameras provided by the cities of Hampton and Chesapeake. WVEC.com is the only Web site which shows you all of these cameras.

Q. Can I view your traffic images on my mobile device?

A. Yes. WVEC.com traffic images may be viewed by any mobile device which can display standard HTML pages and images. A slimmed-down site designed for mobile devices can be found at www.wvec.com/mobile. This mobile site displays still images only.

Q. How does the Google map work?

A. The Google map is designed to show you exactly where each camera is located on our highway system, and let you quickly select another camera of interest. Clicking a green marker on the map jumps to another camera. You may zoom in our out on the Google map by clicking the plus or minus buttons, or drag the map in any direction with your mouse to change the view. You may view satellite imagery or a hybrid map/satellite image overlay. If you'd like to spend a longer time exploring the Google map, please use the larger map on the traffic index page, which does not have a "time out" function.
