RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — ReaChaun Edwards had 31 points Friday to lead Surry County to a 61-58 victory against J.I. Burton in the Group A, Division 1 girls state championship game.
Edwards scored 17 in the first half and finished with seven steals as the Cougars (21-4) won their first state title and ended Burton's (28-1) quest for an undefeated season.
Ra'Shelle Miller led the Raiders with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Jazz Hill's jumper gave J.I. Burton a 43-41 lead late in the third period, but three layups — two by Edwards — put the Cougars ahead to stay at 47-43 entering the final quarter.
Britney Johnson added 13 points for Surry County, which forced 24 turnovers.
Chelsey Forney added 12 points and Brianna Stallard 11 for the Raiders.
