Martin Asprey took a Grassfield football program that didn't exist and has now made it into his own.
Now in his third season as Grizzlies head coach, they are now a team that is getting plenty of attention. Starting off with 9 losses their first year to making the playoffs last year.
Despite coming up short recently against Maury, the sky is still the limit. ""They're learning how to win", he says. "You gotta keep growing every year." Granted they're in the same Southeastern District as recent traditional power Oscar Smith, but Asprey looks at that as a positive. "Everybody wants to play them tough."
Asprey brought an attitude to Grassfield that has been catching on fast. The Grizzlies went 7-4 last season and made the playoffs. He also brings a different approach to coaching; he's a hands off coach. "I let my staff members coach", he says.
Asprey understands that his team basically creating tradition from scratch. At the rate Grassfield is going, it'll only be a matter of time before they will be among the elite teams in the area.
