Normally, we honor the HS GameTime Athlete of the Week from the offensive side of the ball. This week, we pay homage to one of the area's best linebackers who had an outstanding night last Friday against Ocean Lakes in the Division 6 region final.
Jerod Askew (#44) was a one man wrecking crew for the state semifinal-bound Tigers. In their 28-21 win over Ocean Lakes, the Tennessee-bound Askew made several key tackles including a tackle for a loss on fourth and 1 near the end of the third quarter securing his team's 21-7 lead and that would help spark the offense to score the eventual game winning touchdown in the final quarter.
Askew made several more tackles for losses, he also contributed on offense as the Tigers' starting fullback, as he delivered key blocks and helped open some running lanes for Perry Jones, who rushed for 228 yards and four touchdowns, Askew rushed two times for 18 yards, including a nine yard run which help set up Jones' game winner.
Askew also caught a 17 yard pass from receiver Tim Smith off a fake field goal and although it did not lead to a score, it was just another highlight of the night for Jerod Askew, our HS GameTime Athlete of the Week.
The road to a state championship continues for Oscar Smith this Saturday on the road against fellow unbeaten Oakton, champions of the Northern Region, in Vienna. Both teams come into their Division 6 state semifinal with records of 13-0, kickoff set for 130pm in Northern Virginia. Follow all the highlights of our local teams in postseason play right here on .
