The week after the state championships perhaps we should give the Athlete of the Week honor to all three "teams" that won state titles.
However, this is an individual award. Although he got plenty of help from his teammates, we'll make Phoebus High's Shawne Alston our final football star to be Athlete of the Week.
You could star Alston earned this by having a sensational championship or you could say he earned it with a terrific season. Take your pick. Alston was the "go to guy" on offense. In the Phantoms win over Dinwiddie they went to Alston 30 times. He carried for 237 yards rushing on the day and he found the endzone twice.
This year Alston became the fifth Peninsula running back in history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season. Just for emphasis he racked up 971 of those yards in 5 playoff games. He also totaled 34 touchdowns on the season.
Just in case you need to see more of Alston, tune into West Virginia football games in the future. He'll be playing on Saturday's with the Mountaineers.
