This week's HS GameTime.com Athlete of the Week was one of the big reasons Green Run is a major contender for the Division 5 football crown.
Tavon Gatlin had a solid overall performance in the Stallions' 49-17 rout of Grassfield last Friday in the Eastern Region Division 5 quarterfinals.
Gatlin scored on an 83 yard kickoff return and a 31 yard reception in additions to two interceptions on defense to spark Green Run's second half surge breaking open a tight 21-17 halftime lead over the Grizzlies, who were making their first playoff appearance in school history.
In fact, it was Gatlin's firstinterception late in the opening half which set the score giving the Beach District power the four point halftime lead they would not relinquish.
Gatlin kicked off the second half in dramatic fashion, returning the opening kick 83 yards for the touchdown to extendthe Stallions' lead to 28-17.
Gatlin made his second pick of the game on Grassfield's first play from scrimmage of the half, leading to another score and a 35-17 advantage.
Gatlin completed his outstanding night on the football field with the 31 yard touchdown from Jeraud Simmons, one of five touchdown passes he tossed during the game.
The win propelled Green Run (10-1) into this Friday's Division 5 semifinal matchup against Peninsula powerhouse Phoebus (11-0) at Darling Stadium, kickoff set for 730pm.
