NORFOLK- The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team persevered late over Northeastern on Sunday afternoon, 70-67, in an emotionally charged atmosphere in the 11th annual Hoops for the Cure game at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Old Dominion (17-9, 8-6) snapped their three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion as a back-and-forth affair was pulled out late by the Lady Monarchs, who had an eight-point lead with just over five minutes to play, before Northeastern (13-10, 6-6) went on a 9-0 run to take a 66-65 lead with 1:34 remaining.

Freshman Galaisha Goodhope then responded by drilling a three-pointer to put ODU back in front. After a frantic sequence of events, NU had a chance to tie from the free throw line with eight seconds remaining but the Huskies’ Deanna Kerkhof missed the second free throw and sophomore Tiffany Minor was fouled on the rebound. Minor sunk both free throws to put ODU up, 70-67, and NU’s game-tying three-point attempt just before the buzzer by Kashaia Cannon was off the mark to seal the ODU victory.

Playing with heavy hearts after the loss of Sara Jones on Friday, the volunteer assistant to head coach Karen Barefoot, ODU shot 50 percent from the field (26-for-52), led by senior Jackie Cook’s 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists along with sophomore Shae Kelley who scored 19 points and added nine rebounds, five steals, two assists and a block.

NU was led by Jewel Tunstull’s double-double as she scored 20 points and had 12 rebounds while Cannon added 20 points and Kerkhof had 13. The Huskies were able to overcome a hot start by ODU to take a halftime lead of 34-33 while taking advantage in the paint, 38-24. Cannon hit all five of NU’s three-pointers, who averaged a league-best 8.3 per contest coming in.

ODU had four players in double figures for the first time all season as redshirt senior Mairi Buchan added 13 points and six rebounds along with three steals and Minor had 10 points and four rebounds. Cook, Buchan and Minor all hit a pair of three-pointers as ODU drained eights shots from behind the arc. The Lady Monarch bench outscored the Huskies, 23-8 and out rebounded NU, 37-32.
