Painless penny pinching: For the holidays
01:00 AM EST on Thursday, November 25, 2004
--Decorate naturally. Natural decorations are beautiful and, best of
all, free. Arrange greens in a vase and tie with a red bow.
--Or gather a bunch of twigs and add a colorful gumdrop to the ends. It
makes a fabulous display and the kids will love helping.
--Decide on a budget and begin making a list. Consider gift cards and
gift certificates for people who are hard to buy for. That way, you can
control the cost and they can get exactly what they want.
--Have kids create a wish list. Give them a toy catalog from a discount
store and let little ones cut out a picture of their favorite toy.
Limit them to just one or two and you’ll manage their expectations for
Christmas morning.
--Save money on entertaining by hosting a holiday movie party. Borrow a
Christmas movie from the library and serve popcorn and drinks.
--Take an inventory of your wrapping supplies before you shop so you
only buy what you need. Keep in mind that colorful tissue paper and
curling ribbon are versatile and inexpensive.
--Don’t spend extra for gift tags. Make your own by recycling last
year’s Christmas Cards.
--Plan to buy your holiday turkey or ham on sale. Check grocery flyers
and watch for sales and buy it then.
--Bake your own holiday cookies. Even with a cookie mix, it will be
cheaper than buying them from a bakery. Plus, it’s a wonderful
experience for kids.
--Gingerbread cookie ornaments are easy, inexpensive and make a great
gift. Cut out shapes and use a soda straw to make a hole. Once the
cookie has cooled, thread a ribbon for hanging.
So, try these few penning pinching tips and spend a little more time
and a lot less money on holiday fun.
