--Select the right pack for your child’s size and age. The length should
reach from shoulder level to waist and be no wider than her (his) rib
cage. Never buy the pack to “grow into.”
--Also look for padded straps that go over the shoulders. Kids who carry
a heavy load, a waist or chest belt helps distribute weight more evenly.
--Chooses one with multiple compartments because they can help to
distribute the weight of the load. If the pack only has one compartment,
everything will sink to the bottom of the pack and be harder to carry.
--Pack the heaviest items closest to the back of the pack. Try to keep
books and materials neatly packed to keep them from sliding around.
--Never load the back pack with more than 15% of the child’s body
weight. A child weighing a hundred pounds should not carry more than 15
pounds of weight.
--The backpack causes your child to lean over, it’s definitely
overloaded.
--Teach your child to wear the pack using both shoulder straps. Slinging
the pack over one shoulder can cause back injuries.
--If your child must carry a heavy load of books and supplies, then
consider a rolling backpack. Check with your school to make sure you
can use operate them inside the school.
So this year, use these tips to buy your next back pack and take the
load off!
