--The largest size is not always the best value. Check the cost per
ounce before you make a decision. Sometimes two small packages are a
better value than one large one. And of course, look for coupons.
--Check out generic brands. You can find significant savings on plain
cereals such as crisp rice or corn flakes and often they’re just as good.
--Cereal keeps best when placed in an air tight glass or plastic
container and stored in a cool dark pantry.
--A large plastic pitcher with a tight fitting lid is a great way to
store cereal. The spot and handle make it easy for little hands to pour
without spilling.
--To cut down on the amount of sugar in kids cereals, mix together one
half sweetened cereal with one half plain.
--For a quick, no mess breakfast on the go, put dried cereal in a paper
cup and stash it in your car’s cupholder .
--Instant oatmeal is a real convenience but it can be expensive. Make
your own this way.
For each serving blend ½ cup oatmeal into a powder. Add ¼ cup regular
oatmeal, 1/8 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Store in a zip
bag. When you’re ready, add 2/3 up of milk and microwave on high for
about 90 seconds.
--Don’t toss the leftover crumbs on the bottom of the cereal box.
They’re fortified with vitamins so save them to use as filler in
meatloaf or sprinkle on top of fruit cobblers or yogurt.
So try these few Better Living tips to get the most out of your next
cereal purchase.
