The sniff test
12:48 PM EDT on Thursday, July 1, 2004
--To freshen up your kitchen containers, place a crumpled piece of
newspaper inside and seal for a few days. Then wash thoroughly with soap
and water.
--Keep microwave ovens smelling fresh by heating a bowl of water with a
few slices of lemon on high for 30 seconds.
--Wooden cutting boards can trap germs. To keep things smelling good,
pour a generous amount of salt on the board and wipe with a clean damp
cloth. Or just rub the surface with a cut lime or lemon.
--Of course, onions can be a bit of a challenge. After handling onions,
freshen your hands by rubbing with dry mustard. Then rinse well.
--You can also use baking soda along with some citrus peal to deodorize
garbage disposals. Sprinkle in and grind with cold water for the best
results.
--And when cooking strong smelling foods like fish or cauliflower, try
placing a bowl of vinegar on the stove to absorb odors in the kitchen.
--Keep laundry smelling fresh by filling a sock with baking soda and
tying at one end. You can toss it into the hamper and it will absorb
odors.
--Sprinkle musty smelling books with talcum powder and place them in a
sealed zip bag. The powder will absorb moisture and the book will be
odor free in a few weeks.
--Dryer sheets work wonders to freshen up shoes and they’ll keep linens
fresh when placed between sheets and towels.
--To absorb odors in your car fill unused ashtray compartments with
potpourri. Heat from the car will activate the fragrance and keep things
smelling good.
So there you have it, a few quick ways to make things smell a whole
lot better.
