--Choose melons that are heavy for their size and that smell fragrant.
Weight indicates that it has more juice.
--Refrigerate ripe melons for about 5 days. Watermelon should be
refrigerated immediately or stored in a cool, dark place.
--Always wash all melons before cutting. Bacteria on the rind can easily
be transferred when slicing the melon open.
--Cut melons will absorb other orders in the refrigerator, so wrap them
tightly. If you are not going to use the whole melon after cutting, it
will keep longer if you don't scoop the seeds out of the remaining half.
--Cut watermelon should be served within in a day or two; otherwise, the
texture breaks down.
--Melons make wonderful containers for cold soups, salads and fruit. A
soup made from cantalope and yogurt is a great for hot summer nights.
--Make your favorite jello recipe in cut melon and then slice into
individual servings.
--Melons also make great centerpiece bases combined with flowers and
other fruit. The high sugar and water content in watermelon will keep
arrangements fresh for a long time.
--For a fun cool treat, use cookie cutters to make shapes out of melon
slices. Combine them with melon balls and other fruit on skewers for a
decorative touch.
--Freeze leftover melon and use pieces instead of ice cubes to add zip
to summer drinks.
