Car care to save money
01:17 AM EDT on Thursday, April 22, 2004
-Don't waste money on higher octane gas. Use only the octane listed in
your owner's manual.
-Buy gas early in the morning. You're actually getting up to five
percent more for your money if you buy gas before the heat from the
afternoon sun has had a chance to heat and expand the gas in the
station's fuel tank.
-Don't top off your fuel tank after the automatic cut off stops the
flow. The gas can expand and overflow.
-Use your air conditioner! The design of cars over the last ten years
has made them extremely efficient. The drag created by lowering the
windows actually requires your car to use more fuel. This is especially
true on long trips at high speeds.
-Change your air filter regularly. A dirty filter will lower gas mileage.
-Clean out your trunk and remove your roof rack. Extra weight and drag
decreases your car's fuel efficiency.
-Check your tire's air pressure. You can loose two percent of fuel
economy for every pound of pressure under recommended pounds per square
inch. Your tires will last longer if properly inflated.
-Drive at 55MPH. Experts say a car driven at 65 MPH will use 17-percent
more fuel. And at the price of gas these days, that savings can add up.
-Don't let an engine idle for more than one minute. It takes less gas to
restart your car.
Stick to these few tips and you'll literally be driving a bargain.
