Painting tips

--To get a professional look, use professional techniques. Start by cutting in. Paint around the edges of the wall with a brush first and then fill in the larger areas with a roller. This will help keep paint off the ceiling and baseboards.

--New roller naps often have loose fibers. Avoid fibers sticking to the wall by wrapping the entire roller nap with masking tape. Then just zip it off, loose fibers and all.

--Many people are sensitive to paint odors. You can cut down on them by mixing half a small bottle of vanilla extract into the paint. It will make the odor less intense without impacting the color or quality of the paint.

-- Once you finish painting, secure the lid and store the can upside down. This will help prevent a film from forming on the paint’s surface. It’s also a good idea to brush a bit of paint on the outside of the can to indicate how much paint is left.

--Store used roller naps in their original plastic sleeves. Just slide them back into a carefully opened sleeve and tuck in the ends. This will keep the nap and paint fresh for touch-ups or additional coats. Stored correctly, they can last for several months. (Look for rollers with a roomy sleeve so you will be able to tuck in the edges. Tightly packaged roller naps will not work).

--For small touch ups, like scratches, consider pouring a little leftover paint into a clean nail polish bottle. It’s simple, convenient and comes with a built in brush!

--A little warm vinegar is a perfect solution to clean oil-based paint from brushes if you run out of paint thinner. Carefully warm the vinegar in an old pot, then clean the brushes outdoors to prevent a mess in the kitchen.

So, brush off any worries about painting and try these few Better Living tips!
