Winter tips
01:08 PM EST on Thursday, January 15, 2004
-Buy windshield wiper fluid that won't freeze. It cost about a dollar
more, but it will be well worth it when the temperatures drop. It's
usually yellow or green in color, but ask a sales person to be sure.
-Sprinkle kitty litter lightly over sidewalks and stairs to help provide
traction when things get icy.
-Fill up your gas tank, it's a good idea not to let your tank get to low
during very cold weather.
-Check tree branches near your house and power lines. Ice can
accumulate on branches and cause them to break, and that can damage
anything around them.
-Keep a supply of paper wrapped logs handy to burn in your fireplace
should your power go out. Even if you have a stash of wood, it can get
damp and not be very useful until it dries out.
-If locks freeze up, try carefully warming a key with a lighter. Gently
insert the warm key into the lock until the ice melts.
-Indoors, don't use your fireplace too often. Although a fire can
beautiful, it can actually draw heat out of your room an send it up the
chimney.
-Use your ceiling fan in the winter. Since warm air rises to the
ceiling the fan can help push it down closer to your living areas.
So don't let Jack Frost get you this winter, use these few tips to
stop him cold.
