Chinese New Year
06:07 PM EST on Thursday, February 19, 2004
You don’t have to be Chinese to enjoy the wonderful traditions of Chinese New Year. Here are a few ideas to help you celebrate.
It is traditional to clean the house thoroughly and pay any outstanding debts before the new year starts. Cleaning on New Year’s Day can “sweep up evil spirits.”
Put away knives and sharp objects. Sharp edges are thought to keep good spirits away.
It is also customary to dress in completely new clothing for a fresh start. Red is a favorite and is thought to bring the wearer a bright and happy future.
Food and lots of it is a big part of the New Year. Fish are usually served whole to represent togetherness and abundance.
Noodles should be served uncut for long life. Investing in special noodle bowls to eat them makes celebrating even more fun. Special dumplings and sesame balls are also a favorite treat.
The New Year is time for family gatherings and guests. Hot tea and a “prosperity tray” filled with traditional fruit and candy are served. Each treat represents something special.
After refreshments are served, special red envelopes containing “lucky money” are exchanged. This gift is supposed to bring luck and prosperity.
So there you have it, a few ways to sample another new year with an Asian flavor. |
