Richmond Police Chief Rodney Monroe confirmed Wednesday that a body was found in rural Mathews County, but he would not say whether it is a missing Virginia Commonwealth University student.
"At this time, we do not, I repeat, we do not know who the remains belong to," Monroe said at a news conference outside the Mathews County sheriff's office.
Monroe said investigators from VCU discovered the location of the body, FBI investigators were collecting evidence from a large crime scene and state police would investigate the discovery of the remains.
A task force of local, state and federal agencies was created to investigate the disappearance of VCU student Taylor Marie Behl of Vienna, Va., who was last seen leaving her dormitory on Sept. 5.
The remains were discovered in a grave in a heavily wooded area on private property in the county, about 75 miles east of Richmond.
