Karen loves telling stories. She considers herself a social detective - discovering news that affects you!

She started college at Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. Her summers were spent in one internship after another. In 2005 she did her first stint at WKRC in her hometown of Cincinnati. In the spring of 2006 she studied abroad in Pamplona, Spain at the Universidad Pública de Navara.

She got the first real taste of the biz from the ground up. The following summer she set her sights a little higher and got an internship with Geraldo at Fox News Channel. The following summer it was CNN in the DC Bureau. She also helped in the investigation of a Louisiana senator’s escort service scandal, all of which gave Karen a very diverse seasoning in the news business.

After graduating summa cum laude, she got her first gig at KTAL-TV. As a reporter at NBC 6 news, she covered hurricanes, the film industry, Shreveport-General Motors, city scandals, drug busts and sting operations, and the world of casinos and gambling. Through all of the stories she’s covered, it’s the people of Louisiana that got close to her heart.

Karen joined the 13 News team in April 2010. She loves living in beautiful Hampton Roads and is excited to become part of the community. Karen wants to cover the issues that you care about. Please email her with any ideas at Khopkins@wvec.com.
