JAMES CITY CO – A man’s body was set on fire and authorities are working to identify him and determine whether he was already dead or whether the flames killed him.

The body was spotted Tuesday night by passing drivers who thought there was a brush fire.

But authorities quickly realized there was a body on the side of Merrimac Trail road engulfed in flames.

On Wednesday, nearly a dozen officers canvassed the road and nearby woods looking for evidence. They also checked stores and reviewed security camera footage at businesses in hopes of learning the man’s name.

Wednesday evening, police revealed more information on the victim.  Investigators describe him as a black man, 28-35 years old, 6'1," 175 pounds with a goatee and three gold caps on his front teeth.

The man also had several tattoos on his back, chest, stomach, shoulder, and legs.  There are photos attached of these tattoos.  Please note-- they are graphic.

The victim was wearing a white shirt with a tiger character on the front.
