PRAGUE (AP) — Doctors say a woman with a heart transplant has given birth, in a first for the Czech Republic.
Jan Pirk of Prague's Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine says the 30-year-old mother had a heart transplant at the institute in December 2008. The woman gave birth to a baby girl by Cesarean section at Prague's U Apolinare maternity clinic and was released with her daughter Friday.
Her cardiologist Marketa Hegerova says doctors usually don't recommend that women with heart transplants get pregnant due to health risks. But she says the pregnancy in this case went smoothly and the mother and baby are in good condition.
Pirk said about 100 women with heart transplants have given birth worldwide.
