From MySpace to Yahoo! to AOL, places where children and teens spend time online are also places where predators lurk.

Making the Internet safer is a priority for state lawmakers who passed tough legislation and Attorney General Bob McDonnell created a task force to deal with the issue. He says there are 50,000 predators on the Internet at any given time.

He and other task force members want parents to be on the front lines of this battle.

"While this computer seems to be safe sitting in your kid’s bedroom, there is danger lurking if parents don't take a role in finding out what their kids are doing."

At Cox High School in Va. Beach Tuesday, McDonnell brought together people from the technology industry, law enforcement and educators to find new ways to get parents involved.

"You've got to take an interest. You’ve got to know how to turn the computer on, what filters are available, how to research a history in a chat room and find out what your kids are doing and if you do that you are going to keep them safer."

Donna Rice Hughes is with “Enough is Enough,” an organization fighting to keep the Internet safe for children.

She says too many parents don’t understand the dangers in cyberspace.

"They are absolutely stunned at the way the pornographers and the sexual predators are exploiting this wonderful technology to get to kids," she stressed.

She said children online are constantly bombarded with X-rated material.

“Internet pornography is the crack cocaine of pornography,” she stated
