NORFOLK -- More and more companies want your old cell phone and they’re willing to pay for it. They either resell the phones or use the parts.

Promises of big money for your old phone may sound too good to be true.

The Website phoneiscash.com sets prices for used phones. You find the model number, type it in and wait for the value to appear.

If you don’t know what the phone is worth before you try to sell it, it’s easy to get low-ball offers.

Do an online search and you’ll see dozens of complaints from people who feel like they’ve been ripped off by companies that specialize in buying cell phones.

Beverly Scott of Norfolk is one of those unhappy customers. She sold her two old phones to a company in Oklahoma and got a check in the mail for 50 cents.

“There's something really wrong I think when you advertise for up to $125, but people should know you're not going to get that much but 50 cents for two," she said.

Many online companies offer some money and others offer a gift card, but you need to read the fine print before you sell.

Tonight beginning on 13News at 5, we’ll have some advice on how to sell your phone from a person in Hampton Roads who buys them.
