Motorcyclist dies after high-speed pursuit

09:29 AM EDT on Tuesday, October 23, 2007

A high speed police chase in Virginia Beach ended with the death of a motorcyclist early Tuesday morning. Police say the speed of the chase reached over 100 miles per hour.

The man died when his motorcycle crashed into another car at the intersection of Rosemont Road and Lynnhaven Parkway.

Witnesses say there was almost no way the motorcycle could have stopped in time to avoid the crash.

"The officer told me he was going at least 145 following him, and then he slowed down towards the light because he couldn't keep up with him," said eyewitness Andrew Lambert.

Police tried to pull the motorcycle over for speeding on I-264, but instead of stopping, the motorcycle sped away. Police say the man sped down Rosemont Road, blowing through several stoplights. The high speed ride ended at Lynnhaven Parkway.

“I was watching the bike and kind of seeing what was going on and then I looked over and saw the car, and I said, ‘Oh, it’s going to hit, here it goes,’” said Andrew Lambert.

The motorcyclist was killed instantly. The driver of the car suffered minor injuries.

Soon after the crash, friends of the victim arrived at the accident scene.

According his friends, the 23-year-old victim had just gotten out of the Army and was very involved in the motorcycle community, working at a local motorcycle shop and a member of a local riding club.

His friends say they don’t condone running from police but they are questioning how police handled the situation.

"At what point do police say, “Okay we need to stop chasing this guy before he hurts himself or someone else,’” said Jay Hurnaez, friend of the victim.

Friends told 13NEWS the victim’s license was suspended, and that may be the reason he failed to stop for police.
