Carbon monoxide leak at Oceanfront hotel sends 8 to hospital
06:34 PM EDT on Sunday, July 6, 2008
Eight people at an Oceanfront hotel are taken to the hospital with extremely high levels of carbon monoxide.
Officials say none of the injuries were considered life threatening, and although all those affected by the leak are expected to make a full recovery, the episode put a damper on the holiday weekend.
Rescue crews spent much of the afternoon at the Ocean Sands Hotel on 22nd and Atlantic.
The problem shut down one of the busiest parts of the Oceanfront while crews tried to figure out what was making people sick.
The initial call came into Virginia Beach dispatchers of a person suffering from nausea.
As crews arrived on scene and began searching, they discovered the problem.
An electrical short in a spa motor caused a ventilation fan to malfunction. As a result, the fan didn't push carbon monoxide out of the pool area, causing eight people to become sick.
Fire Department spokesman Leon Dextradeur said most of the patients suffered nausea, and one had a hypertensive reaction. Five victims were taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital, and three went to Leigh Memorial.
John Wardle from Vermont was checking into the Ocean Sands Sunday afternoon. He never thought the place where he'll be sleeping for the next few nights would have carbon monoxide problems.
“It never entered my mind, but when I saw the TV trucks here, I said to my wife, ‘This does not look good,’” said Wardle.
The malfunction caused carbon monoxide levels to spike excessively.
Typically, air has 35 parts per million of carbon monoxide over an eight hour period. This afternoon at Ocean Sands, those numbers were at 500 to 1000 parts per million.
Wardle hopes Oceans Sands has the problem cleared up before he puts his head on a pillow to sleep.
“You can't smell it, you can't taste it, so we're at the mercy of the resort,” said Wardle.
Hotel management was unavailable for comment Sunday.
