SUFFOLK  -- The strong afternoon winds are causing problems on land and on water.

In Suffolk, a power line fell across Route 17 near the Godwin Bridge at Governor's Point, forcing police to stop and reroute traffic.

South bound traffic was diverted down Crittenden Rd. North-bound traffic is being diverted onto Bennetts Pasture Rd. for several hours.

Pieces of the awning were picked up and moved from the street.

A just two miles down the road, a brush fire was sparked by a transformer on Crittenden Road. The fire was out by 3:30 p.m.

Around noon, a strong gust of wind blew the awning off a home on Oconee Road in Va. Beach. People scurried to pick up the pieces from the middle of the road.

According to the Dominion Power Website, thousands of customers in southeastern Virginia, which covers Hampton Roads, were without power into the early evening.

A wind advisory is in effect until 10:00 p.m Wednesday for Hampton Roads and areas west, including Franklin, Emporia and parts of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

On the water, the Coast Guard is warning boaters to be alert and monitor conditions as the front passes through North Carolina and Virginia.
A gale-force wind warning is in effect until 7:00 .m. Thursday with winds that could hit  40 MPH or more.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to wear life jackets and file a plan so people know where you’re going and when to expect you.

For boaters who’re staying on land for New Year’s Eve and day, the Coast Guard recommends you do what’s necessary to prevent damage at the dock.
