VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police say drinking and driving proved to be a deadly combination Sunday night.

Investigators say John Julius Korte, 20, was killed when the car he was in lost control and struck a tree on Wolfsnare Road.

Korte, called Jack by his friends and family, attended George Mason University and was a 2007 graduate of Cox High School.

According to 13News' partners at the Virginian Pilot, Korte was the 2006 All-Tidewater Player of the Year in volleyball and played in college.

Police say the driver, Cameron Paul Crockett, 20, was speeding and that alcohol contributed to the crash.

The two were long-time friends and live near each other, not far from the accident scene, according to the victim's family.

It happened in front of Joe Dickson’s home. He says he was online and initially heard a screech before hearing a crash.

“My roommate bolted out the door and I called 911,” he said.  “We ran to the car to do what we could.  It was a terrible scene and it’s still kinda sinking in.”

Crockett was taken to the hospital for treatment. He was released December 30 and is in the Va. Beach jail on charges of aggravated involuntary manslaughter, DUI, refusal, illegal possession of alcohol and driving without a license, police said.

According to authorities, Crockett was wearing a seatbelt, but Korte wasn't.
