Norfolk Southern train derails in Illinois, knocks out power
06:05 PM EST on Thursday, December 27, 2007
MONTICELLO, Ill. (AP) -- Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a freight train to derail in the eastern Illinois community of Monticello.
The derailment briefly knocked out power to much of the town, but no one was hurt.
Authorities say the 22 Norfolk Southern rail cars that went off the tracks just after 6 a.m. were empty grain carriers. Two engines left the tracks, too.
Ameren spokesman Leigh Morris says 1,900 customers in Monticello and nearby communities lost power, but all have been restored.
Monticello Fire Chief Rick Dubson says diesel spilled from one engine, forcing railroad crews to clean it up.
Norfolk Southern is based in Norfolk, Virginia.
