Officials break ground on Norfolk's light rail
12:14 AM EST on Sunday, December 9, 2007
Norfolk's light rail system it's latest step forward Saturday when city and state leaders broke ground on the $232 million dollar project.
Governor Kaine, along with Hampton Roads Transit officials slammed ceremonial hammers into a set of golden railroad spikes during a reception at Harbor Park.
"The Tide," as it's called, will run from Newtown Road to EVMS, with stops near Norfolk State and throughout downtown.
"We need to have more and more public transit options," said Kaine, "with the rising price of gasoline what it show is its going to be rail, light rail and bus, that are going to be increasingly important in the future."
And while it's hoped the Tide will roll in money to businesses along its route, some small business owners are a bit concerned.
Bobby Huber, owner and chef of downtown restaurant Bobbywood says he's willing to take the good with the bad.
"I think it'll encourage more people to come downtown, spend more money," said Huber.
But he's worried that the months-long construction on the Tide may block downtown streets - driving away some of his customers.
"I think it's going to be tough, when there's no business coming, because people can't get down here, I can't tell my landlord I can't pay rent."
The Tide is scheduled for completion sometime in 2010.
