Norfolk federal jury rules in favor of jail in discrimination case
06:23 PM EST on Thursday, December 4, 2008
NORFOLK (AP) -- A federal jury has ruled the Hampton Roads Regional Jail didn't discriminate against a Norfolk woman when it refused to hire her as an officer because she was born without a right arm.
Channelle Taylor sued the 1,250-inmate jail, alleging that it had violated the Americans With Disabilities Act. The 23-year-old Taylor went through the jail's 8-month application process, but was then dismissed.
Jail officials argued that they followed the disability law in allowing Taylor to go through the hiring process. Although the job description for officers requires applicants to have manual dexterity in both hands, Taylor passed all the requirements up until the final physical exam.
The jury ruling came out Thursday.
