Va. may face tougher seatbelt laws

06:17 PM EST on Tuesday, December 4, 2007

Reported by: Shannon Sims

National statistics show fewer people die in car crashes in states that have stronger seat belt enforcement laws. Now, some believe Virginia should tighten theirs.

Currently, Virginia police do not cite people for not wearing a seatbelt unless they’re pulled over for breaking another law.

Trooper Tony Cynje told 13News he has heard it all when it comes to drivers not buckling up.

“’I just didn’t think about it.’ ‘I just left from the store,’” Cynje said, recalling some excuses. “Different reasons, but still not wearing their seatbelts.”

From January to October this year, police records show 380 out of 810 people killed in traffic crashes were not wearing their seatbelt.

Over the years, state lawmakers have tried to pass stricter seat belt legislation but their efforts have failed.

Sammy Carr with Drive Smart Virginia supports a primary seat belt law, saying statistics shows such a law would save lives.

“In Virginia, alone, families lost lives. Fifty people would be here today if we had a primary seatbelt law,” he said.

Drivers 13News spoke with were divided on whether officers should pull them over just because they’re not wearing their seatbelts.

“I don’t think you have to be forced to do it,” said Melody Walsh. “If you want to live, you do it, but not your arm twisted to do it.”

“It’s something to think about,” said Wilbert Wittaker. “I might, and I might now, especially if it happened to me.”

During a traffic speed sting on Interstate 64 last week Cynje said drivers still weren't getting the message.
