Newport News assistant police chief demoted over DUI

03:59 PM EST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

NEWPORT NEWS – Dawn Barber is no longer an assistant police chief in Newport News.

13News was the only crew in the courtroom Wednesday as she was found guilty of DUI.

The judge fined Barber $500, sentenced her to 30 days behind bars, suspended her license for a year and ordered her to take an ASAP class.

The judge allowed Barber to drive on a restricted permit while in the ASAP program.

When she successfully completes it, the jail time will be suspended for two years and the fine cut in half.

Barber was stopped on I-64 near King Street in Hampton in August.

After the hearing, Barber told 13News there was no excuse for what happened.

Barber says she's also been reduced in rank to captain.
