Illegal immigrant to serve 24 years then face deportation
06:28 PM EST on Monday, November 19, 2007
An illegal immigrant will spend 24 years behind bars and then face immediate deportation. So ruled Va. Beach Judge Thomas Shadrick during sentencing for Alfredo Ramos.
Ramos pleaded guilty on August 13 to two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter.
Alison Kunhardt, 17, and Tessa Tranchant, 16, were killed March 30 when their car was struck from behind at a stoplight at Virginia Beach Boulevard and Kings Grant Road.
Court testimony revealed Ramos had a blood alcohol level of .24.
Ramos pleaded guilty on August 13 to two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter.
The families of the girls wrote prepared statements in hopes that the judge would give Ramos the maximum sentence for aggravated involuntary manslaughter.
"I think about being with Allie every day," said Kundhardt's father, David. "In July, I had thoughts of suicide."
"I tried over and over begging for her to come back to me," said Tranchant's mother Colette. "But, I looked in her eyes and knew she was gone. I was devastated."
Family and friends of Tranchant and Kunhardt cheered and cried when Judge Shadrick announced the sentence for Ramos. A 40-year sentence was the maximum he could receive, but 16 years were suspended.
"If you end up back in this country, you will serve those 16 years," Shadrick told Ramos.
In the meantime, Tranchant's father will be on The O'Reilly Factor on FOXNews, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
O'Reilly has repeatedly criticized the city of Va. Beach for not knowing that Ramos was in the country illegally.
13News reported in June about two lawsuits being filed by the victims’ families.
Trachant’s family has filed suit against Ramos for $30 million; Kunhardt's attorney is suing the restaurant, Ensenada, the family believes consumed the alcohol. The family is asking for $10 million in damages. The owner of the restaurant has said he never served Ramos any alcohol.
