Ex-Poquoson wrestling coach faces DUI, drug charges

10:25 AM EST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

POQUOSON – Poquoson High School is looking for a new wrestling coach after the weekend arrest of the man who'd led the team for two years.

Mark Strickland was charged Sunday with DUI and marijuana possession.

Authorities say Strickland was arrested after police radar recorded his SUV going 48MPH in a 25 MPH zone near his home on Odd Road.

Strickland, 33, is free after posting bail Sunday.

Besides being a coach, Strickland was an in-school suspension coordinator.

At Poquoson High, students can't believe what's happened.

"I was just shocked. He seemed like a nice guy and I talked to him sometimes," said Hunter Beale.

"Some of them left school today because of people antagonize them, talking about the coach and stuff," added Chase Conner.

For now, the assistant coach is in charge of the team. School officials wouldn't say whether Strickland resigned or was let go.
