Funeral planning now can ease burden later

08:19 AM EDT on Thursday, November 1, 2007

Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying “There’s nothing certain in this world but death and taxes.”

You can’t do anything about taxes, but you can plan for your eventual ending with funeral and cemetery pre-arrangements.

"I have a plan. It's going to be beautiful," says Alinda Vollmer.

"Anytime you can organize your end of life, it's probably a good thing for your heirs," notes Mark Scura.

"I think it's very important, crucially important," adds Vivian Rodriguez.

Planning your final departure can make it easier on loved ones when the time arrives.

"It's very common for families to have plots.  A common misconception actually is that when they have the plot, they think that they have everything when in actuality when looking at ground burial. That's only 1/4 of what they need to put in a pre-arrangement order," explains Anita Buechler with Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Va. Beach.

Here’s what you have to cover: your plot, crypt or niche, and outer burial container or vault, the internment fee and your headstone, plaque or ground plate.

The second part of planning happens at the funeral home, where you choose the kind of service you want, burial or cremation or a casket or urn.

Funeral packages can help the process along.

"It's not supposed to be a burden. It's supposed to offer peace of mind," stresses Caroline Butler, with Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home and Memorial Park.

AARP statistics show nearly a third of Americans over age 50 has pre-paid some or all of their funeral and burial expenses.

Alinda Vollmer is one of them.

"It's part of life, you know, while you're living. Talk about death. It's okay. It happens to all of us."

In most cases, you can finance your cemetery costs, like you do buying a vehicle.

You also can consider buying insurance to cover funeral costs, which will reach into the thousands.
