Family claims bed bugs tormented them at local hotel

07:47 PM EDT on Tuesday, October 30, 2007

A Virginia Beach family says they were attacked by bed bugs at an Oceanfront hotel.

Elizabeth Glenn says she and her 10-year-old daughter were tormented for days by bed bugs in their Rodeway Inn hotel room.

After a visit to the emergency room and some time on the internet, Glenn realized bed bugs may have binged on her blood.

“I was horrified,” she said. “My child and me had been eaten alive by bugs. It was the most disgusting thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Glenn says she collected two bugs from the hotel room and gave them to her lawyer.

“They feel like acid is in your skin,” said Glenn, who’s suing the hotel for $400,000. “They burn, they itch. My daughters have scars for itching so much. It's just horrific.”

The Health Department searched room 208, where the family stayed, and found one living bed bug in the room. Inspectors ordered the hotel to clean the room immediately.

The owner, Sanjay Gandhi, says he's kept 208 off the market ever since and threw out the sheets and mattresses.

“I've never saw any bed bugs here and I don't know what else I can say,” said Gandhi.

A check of health inspection reports for the motel back to 2005 found no cases of bed bugs.

They were cited four times for having mattresses and sheets that did not meet health department standards.
