Blackwater USA provides security for many U.S. civilian operations in Iraq.

About 40 protesters marched at the gate of Blackwater to oppose the private security company's involvement in a shooting incident last month in Iraq.

Authorities said some of the protesters begain painting the signs to Blackwater in red paint and they also blocked the road. They were arrested when they refused to disperse, authorities said.

Blackwater guards are accused of killing 17 Iraqis in Baghdad during a September 16 attack.

Families of those killed have sued Blackwater, charging that the Moyock, North Carolina-based firm violated U.S. law and fostered a culture of lawlessness among its employees.

The company is the largest of the State Department's three private security contractors.

Arrested are: William Mathias Streight, 53, of Treviians, VA; Laura Lee Marks, 40, of Ayden, NC; Steven John Baggarly of Norfolk; Mary Therese Grace, 51, of Wolfton, VA; Elizabeth Velkey Brockman, 45, of Durham, NC; Marks Peter Colville, 46, of New Haven, CT; Peter Johns DeMott, 60, of Ithaca, NY
